Mirza Ghalib, was an eminent Urdu and Persian poet, who began composing poems at a tender age of 11. The language of his shayari is mainly Urdu but he also knew Arabic, Persian and Turkish.

Bazicha-e-atfal hai Duniya mere aage

 Hota hai shab-o-roz Tamasha mere aage

The world is a children’s playground before me
Night and day, a new play is enacted before me

2.

Aah ko chahiye ik umr asar hote tak

Kaun jeetaa hai teri zulf ke sar hote tak

A prayer needs a lifetime, an answer to obtain
who can live until the time that you decide to deign

Hazaaron ḳhvahishen aisi ki har ḳhvahish pe dam nikle

Bahut nikle mire arman lekin phir bhī kam nikle

Though many of my desires were fulfilled, majority remained unfulfilled.

Na tha kuchh to ḳhuda tha Kuchh na hota to ḳhuda hota

Duboya mujh ko hone ne Na hota maiñ to kya hota

In nothingness God was there, if naught he would persist
Existence has sunk me, what loss, if I didn’t exist

Ye na thi hamari qismat ki visal-e-yaar hota

Agar aur jiite rahte yahī intizar hota

That my love be consummated, fate did not ordain
Living longer had I waited, would have been in vain

Qaid-e-hayat o band-e-gham asl men donon ek hain

Maut se pahle aadmi ġham se najat paa.e kyun

The prison of life and the bondage of grief are one and the same
Before the onset of death, how can man expect to be free of grief?

7.

Un ke dekhe se jo aa jaatī hai muñh par raunaq

vo samajhte haiñ ki bīmār kā haal achchhā hai

With their one look the face glows

They think the ill person’s health has improved

 8.

 Aae hai bekasi-e-ishq pe rona ‘Ghalib’

Kis ke ghar jaega sailab-e-bala mere baad

         For this helplessness of love, now tears I do shed

         Whose home will this flood inundate, after I am dead

       9.

        Aata hai daagh-e-hasrat-e-dil ka shumar yaad

Mujh se mire gunah ka hisab ai ḳhuda na maang

The wounds of desire come to my mind when you ask the account of my sin.

 Now, Oh Lord! I am reminded of my life in your world

10.

Hum ko malum hai jannat ki haqiqat lekin
Dil ko khush rakhne ko Ghalib, yeh khayal accha hai

Though, I do know the realness of Paradise;

However, for consoling my heart, the idea is good Ghalib
