Kaif Bhopali Poetry: An insight into the Indian Urdu poet

Kaif Bhopali was an Indian Urdu poet and lyricist.

He penned lyrics for many Bollywood films including Pakeezah (1972) and Razia Sultan

Kaif Bhopali’s style of poetry was very simple.

In basic Urdu words, he could say meaningful deep things. A quick example of this style can be seen in his famous couplet:

kaun aaega yahan koi na aaya hoga

mera darwaza hawaon ne hilaya hoga

Nawed Akhter, an independent Documentary Film-maker from Gurgaon, had the rare opportunity to spend some of his childhood days around Kaif Bhopali.

Here is a very famous Ghazal by Kaif Bhopali:

Dagh duniya ne diye zakhm zamane se mile

Hum ko tohfe ye tumhein dost banane se mile

Hum taraste hi taraste hi taraste hi rahe

Wo falane se falane se falane se mile

Khud se mil jate to chahat ka bharam rah jata

kya mile aap jo logon ke milane se mile

Man ki aaghosh mein kal maut ki aaghosh mein aaj

Hum ko duniya mein ye do waqt suhane se mile

Kabhi likhwane gae khat kabhi padhwane gae

Hum hasinon se isi hile bahane se mile

Ek naya zakhm mila ek nai umr mili

Jab kisi shahr mein kuchh yar purane se mile

Ek hum hi nahin phirte hain liye qissa-e-gham

Un ke khamosh labon par bhi fasane se mile

Kaise manen ki unhen bhul gaya tu ai ‘kaif’

Un ke khat aaj hamein tere sirhane se mile
